Celebrating India's Civic Sense Heroes: A Nationwide Movement of Hope and Positive Change Civic Sense

This Independence Day, we proudly shine a spotlight on a different kind of hero—individuals whose quiet dedication and profound civic sense are actively building a better India, one act of care at a time. The Better India is thrilled to launch #CivicSenseHeroes, a year-long campaign dedicated to celebrating these unsung champions.

One such beacon of hope is Dadarao Bilhore, a vegetable vendor from Mumbai. In 2015, unimaginable grief struck when his 16-year-old son, Prakash, lost his life due to a pothole. Instead of succumbing to despair, Dadarao channeled his sorrow into transformative action. Within a month, armed with a shovel, he began filling the very potholes that caused his tragedy. Working tirelessly through punishing monsoons, often alone, he has since filled over 1,500 potholes across Mumbai. 'I don't want anyone else to lose a loved one as we have,' he shares, embodying a profound sense of communal responsibility. His actions beautifully illustrate that true patriotism isn't just about fleeting gestures, but about showing up and actively caring for our shared spaces.

This powerful spirit of civic engagement is blooming nationwide. In Hyderabad, retired railway engineer Gangadhara Tilak Katnam, affectionately known as 'the doctor of roads,' dedicates his retirement to repairing potholes with his own pension, spurred by a commitment to prevent injuries to commuters.

Bengaluru showcases the remarkable dedication of Anand Malligavad, a mechanical engineer who, without prior ecological knowledge, taught himself ancient irrigation techniques to revive a 36-acre dried lake near Anekal in just 45 days. Laughing off initial skepticism, he has since brought over 35 lakes back to life, demonstrating the incredible impact of determined individual effort. In Chennai, a small group of residents transformed their neglected Chitlapakkam lake into a thriving movement of over 2,000 volunteers, whose persistence secured a ₹25 crore restoration fund from the government, ensuring water for their entire neighborhood.

Even our neighborhoods are being revitalized by these everyday heroes. In Bengaluru’s Domlur, Dr. Hemant Agarwal, alongside anonymous citizens, cleared ten truckloads of garbage to create Ajja-Ajji Park, a cherished green space. Similarly, in Ranchi, teacher Manoj Ranjan transformed a roadside garbage spot into a vibrant garden of over 200 plants, inspiring his neighbors to cultivate their own green patches and turning a street into a living testament to collective beauty.

Civic sense also manifests in smaller, yet equally powerful, daily moments. A viral video from Bengaluru captured an auto driver politely but firmly asking a passenger to clean up a mess left in his vehicle. This simple act of refusing to look away resonated deeply, reminding us that civic sense is not a rule imposed, but a small debt of care we owe to our home.

The quiet magic of these actions is their contagiousness. When one person steps up, an entire community witnesses what's possible. Change becomes infectious, needing only a spark to ignite a movement. This campaign aims to illuminate these sparks, inspiring more of us to join in.
